After 15 years, our highly acclaimed Lateral stroke chisel sharpener The FASTTRACK has many fans.
Although nobody likes to admit weaknesses or faults in general. We have to acknowledge that for those who prefer a greater choice of sharpening angles the FASTTRACK’s 2 sharpening angles 25 deg and 30 deg although great for some, was not enough for others.
We’ve now done something about it. Introducing a NEW range of 2.5 deg angled diamond stones.
This more than doubles the number of sharpening angles available.
WHY ANGLED STONES?
Good question – The Angled Stones more than double the number of times a blade can be re-sharpened between primary re-grinds.
The main advantage is regaining a sharp edge quickly, saving a lot of time and energy.
Increasing the number of re-sharpens increases the life of your tools.
Sharpening angles are really down to personal preference. As an ex-professional perhaps I didn’t have the time to appreciate the subtle differences between a 25 deg and a 30 deg edge. The most important thing for me at the time was having a chisel in hand that had a decent edge when needed. Providing it was sharp I was happy.
2.5 DEGREE ANGLE
Used on the FTS Chisel sharpener.
The Angled stones take the number of sharpening angles from 2 (25 and 30 deg) to 5 (22.5 deg – 25 deg – 27.5 deg – 30 deg – 32.5 deg)
Used on the NEW FTS Knife Sharpener
The Angled Stones take the number of sharpening angles from 1 (17.5 deg *) to 3 (15 deg – 17.5 deg – 20 deg)
The 15 deg creates a finer bevel edge which is used more widely on Japanese knives
The 20 deg creates a more durable bevel edge which is preferred for meat cleavers etc.
Our entire range of sharpening products all carry our distinctive Diamond Cross pattern. We created this design in search of the optimal balance between our ultra-hard-wearing nickel embedded monocrystalline diamonds and the recesses which holds the sharpening debris away from the abrasive during sharpening, reducing clogging and pasting.

IN-SURFACE GRADE INDICATOR
Our DC FASTTRACK diamond stones are color coded , so at a glance you know which grade of stone you’re using. To double down on this, there’s also a clear grade number embedded at the end of each stone.
As with all M.POWER tools, we try our best to make all accessories retro fit to any Mk or model of each tool that’s we’ve ever made.
The DC Angled Diamond stones are no exception to this.
BEVEL EDGED CHISELS
With the DC 2.5 deg Angled Stones having been specifically designed for use with The FASTTRACK and it being designed specifically for sharpening Bevel Edged Chisels;
the most popular and widely used chisels in woodwork. The Angled stones allow a quicker edge to be gained for “on-site” professionals be it carpenters or for high end installations.
For all round builders and construction guys. A sharp Bevel Edge chisel is a “must have” in anybody’s tool kit or workshop.
Perhaps not as common in an “On-site” Pro’s tool bag, but the noble plane can provide the most incredible finish that really cannot be beaten
As with any cutting tool, they are always only as good as the blade edge. So it is with any plane be it Jack plane, Joining Plane, Smoothing Plane or Rebate or Block. Gain a great edge and that gives you the best chance of a great finish.
The 2.5 deg Angled diamond stones, offer another level of sharpening options to the FASTTRACK KS.
A 20 deg or 40 deg inclusive angle increases the durability of the blade edge. Which is favoured when butchering animals and when the knife edge is subjected to a tougher environment.
Equally the ability to reduce the sharpening angle by rotating the 2.5 deg Angled stone 180 degs. To reduce the sharpening angle to 15 degs favours the higher blend of carbon steels used in Japanese knives.

TECHNIQUE: EXTENDING THE NUMBER OF RE-SHARPENS
Before using the FASTTRACK – Primary grind both chisels and plane blades on a powered grinder to anything just less than 22.5 degs (if you have the angled stones) and just less than 25 deg (if you don’t)
Set up the FASTTRACK as normal – we always recommend screwing it down
Start with the 220# preparation stone, use the FTS back and forth until you raise a continuous wire across the width on the back or flat of the blade.
Remove the wire on the Deburring Plate or on any flat stone.
Depending on your requirements finish the blade using the same either Angled stone or Regular stone that you started but move up grades to either 450# – 600# or 1000#.
Then strop to finish
Re-Sharpen as many times as is practical using the same angle of stone.
As the number of re-sharpens increases, the longer each re-sharpen takes. This is due to the need to abrade more material to gain a fresh wire on the back of the chisel.
The Smaller the chisel, the less material is needed to be removed to re-gain the edge are easier. You may find the secondary bevel you’re creating can be worked back up the main bevel on narrower chisels up to 1/4” (6mm) On plane blades less 1/16” (1.5mm)
Your own personal time constraints will determine when you need to change to Angles. As soon as you change to the next Angle –
With the Angled stones go to the next larger angle e.g. If you started at 22.5 deg Angled move to the regular Parallel stone on the 25 deg wing of the FTS carriage.
A wire will be created in a matter of 5 to 10 strokes, remove the wire and repeat the rest of the process.
When you next max out the size of the secondary bevel with many re-sharpens.
Move to the 30 deg wing of the carriage with a Parallel stone.
Because you are now changing the angle of the secondary bevel in increments of 2.5 degs instead of 5 degs (the difference between 25 deg and 30 deg carriage wing)
The number of re-sharpens is doubled between Primary re-grinds.
